The discovery of the stolen mail from Louisiana, Texas and Arizona residents and the businesses around eight months earlier had propelled what the authorities say has turned into a disturbing dark web investigation. A Louisiana man is facing hundreds of charges related to child pornography and a couple of charges relating to animal sexual abuse. Along with this, he has also been charged for multiple identity theft and stolen mail.
The accused identified as Christopher Aaron Stanfield aged 33 years was in Natchitoches Parish Detention Center, where he had been booked on the 6th of October evening. The authorities have announced that he has been charged for numerous more occurrences.
On the 28th of May 2020, the inquiry had begun with a traffic stop in Rapides Parish around 10 in the morning. The booking records revealed that the Sheriff’s deputies had arrested the accused on nine charges, bearing one count each of:
- criminal trespass,
- having an expired motor vehicle inspection sticker,
- illegal possession of stolen firearms,
- unlawful possession of stolen stuff,
- possession of a firearm by a convicted felon,
- possession of a Schedule I CDS, and,
- possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS),
- simple burglary,
His vehicle’s search had uncovered a duffle bag that contained various pieces of mail meant for 30 businesses and households in the Natchitoches Parish, as the Sheriff’s office reported.
Natchitoches authorities say, “Some of the stolen mail contained personal and business checks, credit card numbers, bank statements and other private information commonly used in identity theft schemes.”
However, the stolen mail had impacted people beyond the Natchitoches Parish. The duffle bag also bore mails of businesses and residents in Arizona, central Louisiana parish of Rapides and Texas.
On the 1st of June 2020, the accused had been released on bond in the evening, and the ongoing investigation in Rapides Parish remained pending, the booking records show. In the early June, Rapides Sheriff’s detectives had contacted their counterparts once more in the Natchitoches Parish. This time, they reported that they had seized a package from the accused’s vehicle continuing sunglasses and eyeglass frames.
Further investigation of the Natchitoches Parish authorities had revealed that the seized package had been reported to be stolen on the 27th of May from a residential mailbox on Louisiana Highway 1. The detectives and the representatives of various other law enforcement agencies had subsequently met in Rapides Parish for sharing their related but separate investigations.
Finally, the Natchitoches Parish authorities received warrants for arresting the accused on 30 counts of stolen mail along with 11 counts of identity theft in their jurisdiction. At Riverview Inn Apartments in Natchitoches Parish, they caught up with him on the 6th of October.
The narcotics agent and the detectives had seized electronic equipment suspected to be drug paraphernalia and narcotics when they searched the accused’s apartment when he was arrested. The accused had remained in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center as he had been booked into the lockup that same evening on various drug charges and 41 counts of theft.
Meanwhile, the authorities report that the detectives had discovered pornography involving the juveniles on the confiscated electronic device. The accused had reportedly told the detectives in an interview that he had been an active user of the dark web since January 2020.
“The dark web is the World Wide Web content that exists on darknets — overlay networks that use the internet but require specific software, configurations or authorization to access,” according to a Facebook post by the Natchitoches Sheriff’s Office. “Through the dark web, private straphanger networks can communicate and conduct business anonymously without divulging identifying information, such as a user’s location.”
The evidence volume had prompted the detectives to ask for help from the Bossier City marshal’s Northwest Louisiana Crimes Against Children task force unit and the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations. On the 25th of January, the Louisiana State Police investigators had reported to the Natchitoches that they had discovered a couple of things on the seized equipment such as:
- One video of sexual acts involving animals.
- Four images of sexual acts involving animals,
- 513 pornographic images involving children under the age of 12, and,
- Six pornographic videos involving children under the age of 12.
This has resulted in hundreds of more charges that were being filed against the accused and included:
- One count of possession of child pornography with intent to distribute.
- 519 counts of pornography involving juveniles, and,
- Five counts of sexual abuse of animals,
The accused’s bonds on the Natchitoches Parish charges a total of $884,000.
The authorities say that for review and prosecution, the ongoing investigation results will be presented to the Natchitoches Parish district attorney’s office. The investigation also includes the Natchitoches Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force and the U.S. Postal Service.
