Blockchain DNS Update

One of the most popular posts here has been Blockchain DNS on Mobile?, which discussed the Blockchain DNS plugin. If you haven’t read the previous post, then to summarize, blockchain DNS is intended to be a decentralized replacement for name servers using the root server system.

Blockchain DNS, once installed, gives you access to blockchain-based domain names such as .bit, .lib, .emc, .coin, and .bazar. You can test if it’s working or not by trying to visit the search engine grep.geek or this site: coredump.geek.

Something that the previous post neglected to mention was that there are a number of “resolvers” that can help you locate Blockchain DNS sites. One of these, friGate, had been mentioned in a previous post, A Suspicious Plugin? FriGate, as their site explains, sends your connection through a Russian-based proxy service. It appeared, however, that the plugin was doing dubious things under the hood.

The full list of options that they mention are as follows, from least reliable and secure to most. These options are “resolvers,” which help you locate the website but do not offer encryption or anonymity:

  • Blockchain-DNS plugin – mentioned in the original post, this is a browser extension that supports unofficial domain names like Namecoin, Emercoin, and OpenNIC (e.g. “.coin,” “.bit”).
  • dotBit.me – A .bit registrar and browser extension
  • FreeSpeedMe – Supposedly this is a Chrome browser extension that supports Namecoin and Emercoin domains, as with Blockchain-DNS, but it seems to be discontinued.
  • PeerName – Like Blockchain DNS, PeerName is a blockchain-based resolver used to access Namecoin- and Emercoin-based domains.
  • GoodbyeDPI
  • Custom DNS Server
  • DNSCrypt
  • Full Node

Tunnels (Browsers) – These create a secure connection to the website, and are more likely to ensure privacy, but often impair speed. The links below go either to explanations about the terminology or to the software itself (as in Tor and I2P).

One or more of the above software or configuration types should enable you to use Blockchain DNS, but as they addressed, some are more secure than others, and also, one or more methods may not work when connecting to every site. If you have further questions about the software, leave a comment or visit the site’s FAQ.
